Did you miss the 2008 Somers Art Fair?

Each year Jeff Martin looks forward to working with the grade 3 and 4 kids of Somers Primary School. The students create drawings that Jeff transforms into a sculptured totem pole which is then painted by the students.

This years work was titled 'A Day at the Beach' and featured items that you might take to the beach.

Following the success of the Back of House exhibition Melbourne, Jeff Martin has started work on Back of House, Sydney.

The Sydney restaurants Jeff has visited so far include Tetsuya's, Bilson's, Otto, Quay, Marque, Sean's Panaroma, Aria, Iceburgs, Claude's, Guillaume at Bennelong, Buon Ricordo, Est, Pier, Lucio's and Bistro Moncur.

Details of this Sydney exhibition for 2009 will be announced here soon.

The inaugural Taste of Melbourne was quite incredible. Held in the Royal Exhibition Buildings, Carlton, the four day event involved a number of the restaurants featured in the Back of House exhibition. The organizers of Taste approached Gould Galleries requesting some of my work for the public areas of the fair. Rob Gould decided to release thirty previously unseen works on paper, alongside a few remaining paintings from the March show, covering over 63 meters of wall space.

Thousands of food lovers braved Melbourne weather to taste samples from the city's better restaurants and I think it is safe to say, this event is here to stay.

Drawing for Life

Jeff Martin has been working with the year 10 and 11 art students of Westall Secondary Collage in a project titled 'Drawing for Life'. Funded by Arts Victoria and with generous support of Eckersleys and the Victor Smorgon Charitable Fund, this project began in early March 2008 and resulted in a group exhibition of work by the students in June 2008.

Back of House

'Back of House' was the title of Jeff Martin's most recent solo exhibition at Gould Galleries, Melbourne, in early 2008. The exhibition derived from sketch books created while visiting fifteen of Melbourne's best kitchens.

The exhibition was officially listed as part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, and promoted as a free public event for the entire duration of the 2008 festival.

The restaurants included were Abla’s, Bacash, Bottega, The Botanical, Da Noi, Ezard, Fenix, The Flower Drum, Grossi Florentino, Jacques Reymond, Pearl, The Press Club, Three One Two, Rockpool Bar and Grill and Vue de Monde.

Watch this space for a documentary that has been made about this exhibition.

Jewelry ?

Talented Melbourne jeweler Ralf Fisch created the broach left inspired by the drawings of Jeff Martin in the lead up to the Back of House Exhibition. Made from 18 carat white and yellow gold, the broach was first worn by Jeff at a chefs lunch to preview the 2008 exhibition. At the end of the luncheon each chef was given a knife pendant as a thank you gift for allowing Jeff Martin into their kitchen.

Somers Art Fair

Well I was in Sydney for the Art fair and missed my first Somers Art Fair as a result. Word has it that the school grossed $55,000.00 which exceeds any previous year and that the weather was not even on their side.

The organizers of this event are very professional and it is a load of fun. So, I would suggest that you mark late October 2008 in your diary now!
